Whitsundays – Like Heaven
Only 17 of the 74 Whitsunday Islands are inhabited, but almost all are located in the national park of the same name. From Airlie Beach start daily tours in the different price classes. During the several-day tours the boat is usually spent on the boat and one or two islands. We chose the tag trip with Thundercat, per person we paid 150 AUD for the trip, in total there were two beaches and two snorkel points on the program. Our speedboat starts at 9am from the Mairna in Airlie Beach and our first stop was Whitehaven Beach.
The highlight of the tour was, of course, the world-famous Whitehaven Beach on the Whitsunday Island, the snow-white beach is regularly chosen as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, in different lists. With our boat we arrived on the opposite beach and first went to the Hill Inlet Lookout. From the viewpoint you have a magnificent view over a part of Whitehaven Beach (total length: 7 km), from above you can see very well how the sand and the sea intermingle and as the turquoise water flows through the canals.
Arrived on the beach you are overwhelmed by the colors. The sand is made of 98% silica, so it is so extremely white, this property is unique in the world. The water has a very pleasant temperature and is crystal clear, so you can discover a lot of marine animals. In knee-high water, we have three lemons shark swimming about 1 meter long and also there are plenty of stingers. After an hour of photographing, drone flying, sunbathing and of course bathing we had to go back to the boat, where the lunch waited for us.
After the lunch, we targeted our first snorkeling pots, and after a brief introduction and explanation of important hand signals went into the water. The boatcrew has fish feeds and lures thousands of fish to the group, who did not want to have so many animals around, had to swim a few meters from the group. Even very large fishes have looked at the “feeding”.
Our last stop was the narrow sand strip of Langford Island, where you could either relax on the beach or snorkel right in front of the beach. The corals there are fantastic and untouched, the corals appear in the most diverse shapes and colors and also the fish seem to enjoy the place. Since we were just low tide, we could only drift from the current to a certain point, because further out the water was then too flat. From the Snorkelspot I was very enthusiastic, since I did not go out on the day trip in the “inner reef” to see such beautiful corals.
The time passed quickly and after the last dive, we went back to Arlie Beach. The tour was definitely worth it and we were just happy to have made the day trip, because we saw everything we wanted to see. The sight of Whitehaven Beach is invaluable and a wonderful memory. The two-man crew was very funny and friendly, I would recommend Thundercat definitely.
